Our 21-year old fencer Daniël Giacon made a phenomenal result by winning the bronze medal at the Belgrade senior men’s foil world cup! He firmly positions himself among the top fencers in the world. We are immensely proud of him and his coach Daniël Nivard, who has worked with him since the beginning.

Over 200 fencers competed in the world cup, including most of the highest ranked top athletes. In the preliminary rounds Daniël won all his matches and qualified directly for the main competition. His teammates Dirk Jan van Egmond and Teun Jans-Köhneke also made it through the poules but were unfortunately eliminated in the preliminary tableau.
 
In the tableau of 64 Daniël started strong, beating Hungarian Szemes 15-10. He also eliminated American Massialas 15-14 in a tense and exciting match. Further wins against American Kumbla and Brazilian Toldo, both 15-10, guaranteed a unique result.

Daniël could only be stopped in the semi-finals by Italian Marini (9-15), eventual winner of the competition. Both fencers were evenly matched at the beginning and it remained an exciting fight until the end. Daniël has been fencing brilliantly all day and the medal is well-deserved. His world ranking improves from 75th to 42nd place.
